aeWelcome to the new 14 Day Skills Challenge. Our focus over the next fortnight will be mainly on Fundamental Movement skills following the 'Move Well Move Often' programme which the children participate in, in school. This programme will be incorporated in all our Hurling and Football drills over the next 2 weeks. Main elements of these FMS are Agiility, Balance and Co-ordination along with many other movements like throwing, catching, jumping landing. All very important for a child's’ development and their improvement in all of the skills of Hurling and Football.

Show the video of our Senior player carrying out each activity as the visual will help your child understand the task at hand. Video's will be posted to the club's Facebook and Twitter pages.

Similar to Part 1 Skills Challenge, we will be accepting 60 second video's showcasing the skills practiced during the fortnight. The best video in each age group (5-11 and 12 to 16) will receive a prize which will be announced in the comings whilst each entrant will also receive a treat. Video’s are to be sent to Kevin Connolly (087 688 5214) or Michael Quinn (087 254 8583) through WhatsApp. Video’s will only be accepted from parents/guardian’s and consent will be given upon entry. You can send your pictures to both Kevin and Michael throughout the challenge and these will be posted on the club’s social media pages.

If you have any queries on the skill challenges then please contact Kevin Connolly (087 688 5214), Darragh Egan (087 242 9545) or Michael Quinn (087 254 8583).

Skill Explanations

5 – 11 year olds

1 . Agility and Strike Hurling

Set out 4 coloured cones in a square 5 metres apart (other objects if no cones like bottle, shoe, jumper, football etc) and call out a sequence like blue, red, green, yellow and ball. When ball is called you leave the grid and jab lift the ball on the run and hit the target with a pull along the ground

Extensions:

- Change the type of lift of the ball (roll lift)

- Get somebody to handpass the ball to you when you leave the grid so you can catch it.

- Keep changing the sequence of the agility runs

- Start on your belly, on your back etc

- Introduce ladders or a weave run when you leave the grid

Count how many times you hit the target out of 10 shots and take a break and go again.
